Obesity in America: The Disease of Epidemic Proportions

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the U.S., with approximately 1 in every 3 American adults more than 20% overweight. This number has increased steadily and will continue because today more than 25% of our children are overweight or obese. Actuarial studies disclosed that more than 300,000 Americans die prematurely from obesity-related complications each year and the direct healthcare expenses and productivity losses as a result of obesity exceed $100 billion annually. It is further estimated that 5 - 7% suffer from clinically severe obesity, or more than 100 pounds overweight. Clinically severe obesity has been linked directly to serious physical and psychological health problems with dramatic increases in mortality.

Weight Loss Surgery: The Best Solution
For the seriously overweight, traditional weight loss techniques offer only temporary results at best. Patients suffering with clinically severe obesity have failure rates approaching 100% when they attempt to lose weight through traditional means. The only medically proven solution to clinically severe obesity, in which long-term weight loss is achieved, has been the advanced operative procedures in bariatric surgery.

Of the two gastric surgeries approved by the NIH’s Consensus Development Conference Panel in 1991, the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass has emerged as the clear procedure of choice with high success rates and few complications when part of a multi-disciplinary program. Surgical patients can often lose at least 75% of their excess weight - and keep it off permanently. The Roux-en-Y is the only procedure that Specialty Health endorses.

Roux-en-Y
A small pouch is formed by separating the stomach into two parts. The small intestine is then cut and attached to the new pouch. The other end is reconnected further down the small intestine, forming a "Y" configuration.
The small stomach pouch fills quickly, allowing the patient to intake only a necessary amount of food. The lower stomach continues to absorb and process gastric juices from other organs while normal digestion continues in the lower abdomen.

Opportunity For Your Hospital

Representing more than 14 million Americans and intensely motivated to find a permanent solution to their severe obesity, patients will travel hundreds of miles to a quality, empathetic and comprehensive program. This new patient draw will dramatically expand your hospital’s traditional service area and increase utilization.

The NIH’s Consensus statement combined with the protection against discrimination in healthcare afforded by the Americans with Disabilities Act, means this revenue-intensive, elective procedure is covered by most insurance plans. Payment is essentially assured with Specialty Health’s insurance pre-approval process.

Despite the advances in this important and emerging subspecialty, very few hospitals have developed quality comprehensive weight loss surgery programs. The experienced management team at Specialty Health, with their long and rich history in developing, marketing, and managing weight loss surgery programs, partners with your hospital team to establish this program. Our programs go far beyond surgeries to comprehensive service packages for patient wellness and financial success. Typically, surgeries begin within six months of the program’s start-up.
